In Memoriam
“It is with the greatest sadness to let you know that MaryFran passed away after a vigorous battle with cancer. She applied the same drive and determination as we have all seen these many years, but the final outcome was inevitable and came all too quickly. Her enormous work ethic and intellect will be sorely missed. We have lost one of the original stalwarts of SWAN, and will feel the loss deeply.”
-- Dr. John F. Randolph

About CIACD
The Center for Integrated Approaches to Complex Diseases (CIACD) specializes in the study of multifaceted diseases, usually chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and osteoporosis. CIACD works to understand the course of development of these diseases, as well as the factors that contribute to variations in the course of development, such as genetics, environment and aging.
The Goals of CIACD are:
- Create a research environment/network in which teams of investigators from multiple disciplines can explore the feasibility of multi-system, cross-disease approaches, linking the cellular and population approaches, to the etiology, prevention, and control of diseases of major public health importance.
- Identify and take advantage of substantial existing data resources to explore these research areas.
- Provide a training environment in which junior investigators and students can consider a more synergistic, process-oriented, multi-level approach, emphasizing integration, synergy, and interaction between systems and within populations.
- CIACD proposes research to evaluate horizontal integration across processes while adding the vertical integration of moving from molecules to populations
